Journalists usually don’t talk about the behind-the-scenes story of reporting an article. This article, though, was a journey. Along the way, one of the sources I interviewed died (not included or quoted in the final draft), and another person was arrested and disappeared (also not quoted in the final draft). Navigating the ethics of journalism while writing about poverty, I frequently remind myself that not everyone survives poverty. Not everyone survives the violent (and often silent) racism of our society –– All the more reason to vote today if you are a Seattle resident.
There are only a few more hours left to drop your Seattle / King County ballot in one of the ballot boxes before 8pm today.
You can read my article for Eater here. But more importantly, please vote. Because even if you feel like your vote doesn’t matter (which I can definitely relate to), just think about all the money that’s invested in gerrymandering, in trying to convince people not to vote.
